Blach Construction, an established commercial builder and construction manager, is experiencing rapid growth in the Central Coast region due to several new project awards.
The company continues to strengthen relationships with the SPCA for Monterey County and Stanford University while contracting with several new K-12 school district partners and the Carmel Mission Foundation.
“We are excited to utilize Blach’s cutting-edge virtual design and BIM tools to help meet the needs of our central coast clients,” said John Haupt, regional manager. “We are very pleased with our expansion in the Central Coast region, a direct result of exceeding the expectations of our clients.”
Seismic Retrofit at the Historic Carmel Mission Basilica – Carmel, CA
Blach was selected by the Carmel Mission Foundation and the Carmel Mission Parish to provide construction and feasibility services for the preservation of the Carmel Mission. Phase 1 of the preservation project, valued at $4.2 million, involves a structural retrofit of the historic Basilica as part of the Carmel Mission’s restoration efforts. The first task of this complex, delicate project involved protecting the church structure from the inclement weather by erecting a scaffold and truss system. This system covers the entire structure with fabric and protects it from the elements while work is performed.
In order to optimize efficiency, Blach mobilized its Virtual Design & Construction group, who used the Company’s Faro Scanner to map and produce a detailed 3-D model of the attic space and catenary arched roof through laser-point scanning. (Learn more about these efforts HERE) Blach’s use of its Building Information Modeling tools and the resulting model is helping the team to minimize construction impacts by pre-cutting building materials for faster, more efficient installation. The project is scheduled to complete in March 2013.
New Elementary School at Alisal Union School District – Salinas, CA
Currently underway, Blach is building a new elementary school in the Monte Bella Development of Salinas, California for the Alisal Union School District. With a budget of $18 million and located adjacent to Monte Bella Community Park, the new school includes seven buildings and will serve 850 students.
The team is using virtual design and construction as well as Lean construction to expedite the schedule. In addition to virtually modeling the entire project to detect challenges before they occur in the field, Blach is performing pull planning techniques for the project schedule, working backwards from the project finish to groundbreaking. This allows the project team to identify the proper sequence and constraints for all construction activities, always looking forward and planning ahead for future milestones, streamlining the schedule and reducing costs.
Construction began in March 2012 and will be completed during the summer of 2013. The District is in the process of selecting a name for the school, which will admit its first students in the 2013-14 school year. Vist the project page HERE.
Four School Modernization Projects at Monterey Peninsula Unified School District – Monterey, CA
Adding to Blach’s growing success in the Monterey area are four modernization projects at the Foothill, Highland, La Masa and Marina Vista elementary school campuses. The modernization projects, completed in September 2012, are valued at $4.4 million and focused primarily on ADA compliance upgrades.
Laboratory Renovation at Stanford University’s Hopkins Marine Station – Monterey, CA
Bolstering an established relationship, Blach completed the renovation of an existing laboratory for Stanford University, under the collaborative Design/Build project delivery approach in the spring of 2012. Blach teamed with HGHB Architects to complete this $450,000 project. This project win was a result of Blach’s successful work on a remodel of the University’s Loeb Laboratory at the Hopkins Marine Station. Vist the project page HERE.
