"John is a natural leader. He has an innate talent for building team-wide rapport and for mentoring and developing everyone working on his sites."
San Jose, Calif., Sept. 28, 2020 – Blach Construction (Blach), a full-service and award-winning commercial builder serving the Greater Bay Area and Monterey since 1970, has elevated longtime employee John Mathias to general superintendent.
A long-time construction veteran, Mathias joined Blach in 2012 as a superintendent with a diverse portfolio of innovative, complex projects. He was initially responsible for managing and supervising day-to-day activity on individual construction sites. Now, as general superintendent and a key member of the company’s newly formed Field Operations Management Team, Mathias oversees all of Blach’s superintendents.
“Since the day he joined Blach, John has been a key contributor to our field operations team and our firm overall,” said Keith Craw, vice president of operations. “We are excited to have him take on this critical position, particularly as we continue to expand our project portfolio. Not only is he extraordinarily experienced and technically astute in all aspects of construction and managing jobsites, he’s a natural leader. He has an innate talent for building team-wide rapport and for mentoring and developing everyone working on his sites. We look forward to having him expand his thoughtful, hands-on approach across all of our projects.”
Mathias comes from a long line of tradesmen, dating back to his great-great-grandfather, who was a well-known gunsmith and master carpenter. Born in New Jersey, Mathias came to California in 1972 with his father, a self-taught union carpenter and general contractor. Before joining Blach, Mathias spent 25 years working for TBI. He had previously been involved in large union construction projects for Swinerton Wallberg, Carl N. Swenson and K.J. McGranahan.
“Our teams are among the best and the various types of community-shaping projects that we build at Blach are very compelling,” said Mathias. “I am motivated to deliver complex structures that exceed our clients’ expectations in both process and craftsmanship. What I find most gratifying is when things come together – essentially click – as a result of a well-thought-out, meticulous and collaborative plan. Simply put, I love what I do.”
