Blach Construction was ranked #14 in the Small business category.

Great Place to Work announced this year’s list last evening at its annual conference in Phoenix, Arizona. Competing against hundreds of companies across the country, Blach Construction participated in a rigorous selection process, which included an employee survey and an in-depth questionnaire about benefits programs and company practices. Great Place to Work evaluates each application using its unique methodology based on five dimensions: credibility, respect, fairness, pride and camaraderie.

“We are incredibly honored by this recognition,” said President and CEO Mike Blach. “I want to thank our employees, who work hard every day to deliver the very best customer experiences. Our goal has always been to create a supportive work environment and positive culture where everyone feels they can be a part of a high-performance team and achieve their personal potential. It’s very affirming to know that our colleagues feel we are achieving this goal and that we compare so favorably to other leading businesses across the country.”

Blach Construction has long been regarded as one of the best places to work regionally. For the past five years running, the company has been ranked in the top six in the annual Best Places to Work in the Bay Area survey, conducted by the Silicon Valley Business Journal and San Francisco Business Times. The company achieved the #1 ranking in 2010. This is Blach’s first inclusion on the national top 25 best places to work list.

Among many attributes, employees’ responses to the survey identified personal support, strong benefits, opportunities for professional development, and a fun, friendly workplace as reasons they feel Blach is a great place to work. “This place is a sincerely amazing company,” one employee says. “Everyone is willing to put others first and make true sacrifices for both the good of the company and the individual employee.

The survey evaluates how employees experience six different aspects of the company. The scores, indicated below, reflect the percentage of employees’ responses to questions as “often,” almost always,” and “sometimes.” Blach’s high scores in each of these areas propelled the company onto this year’s list:

1. Challenges: Training, responsible work, possibilities for advancement. Blach score: 99%
2. Atmosphere: Enjoyable coworkers, fun and cooperative environment. Blach score: 99%
3. Rewards: Special and unique benefits, fair compensation, work-life balance and appreciation for extra effort. Blach score: 99%
4. Pride: Meaningful responsibilities and accomplishments, positive company reputation and community impact. Blach score: 100%
5. Communication: Free and transparent exchange of ideas and information. Blach score: 99%
6. Bosses: Clear direction and vision, competence and acting with integrity and care. Blach score: 98%

Gaye Landau-Leonard, vice president of human resources, commented, “we are thrilled to be recognized as one of the very best workplaces in the nation. As one of our employees stated in the survey, working at Blach is ‘like you hit the lottery of the places to work.’ Nothing could be more gratifying for an HR professional than having highly motivated, engaged colleagues enjoying each other and the work they do in this wonderful company.”
