Funded by the $198 million Measure B school bond, which was passed by voters in June 2008, Blach’s first project with the District involves the construction of a Student Union Building at the Cupertino High School campus.

Currently in the preconstruction phase, this $14 million facility will encompass a library, cafeteria, administrative offices and guidance support services. The project will require extensive coordination with campus operations during the demolition of the existing facility and construction of its replacement.

Construction of the roughly 30,000-square-foot, two-story building is scheduled for June 2012 and will complete by March 2014. Blach is teaming with Santa Rosa-based design firm Quattrocchi Kwok Architects (QKA) to build the new space.

“This is certainly one of the marquee projects for this bond program” said Dave Finn, Project Executive at Blach Construction. “I have never seen a school board, administration or site staff as excited about a new facility.”

The new addition to the campus will be a landmark project: “It creates a signature piece, a statement piece at the front of the school,” said Kami Tomberlain, Principal of Cupertino High School.

The new Student Union Building is being constructed to serve the needs of increasing student enrollment at both Cupertino High School and the Fremont Union High School District over the next few years.

The Fremont Union High School District encompasses the communities of Sunnyvale and Cupertino. The District is composed of five high schools serving more than 10,260 students in grades 9-12.
