The profile, “Prefab science project comes in early, under budget,” attributes the innovation of our Folia building solution to the project’s completion in nearly half the amount of time projected and $3 million under budget.

The Fremont Union High School District set out to build a new, single-building science and classroom complex at Cupertino High School. Instead, what it got was a three-building “Folia Complex” — an innovative concept that came in $3 million under budget and almost a year ahead of schedule.
The approach blends aspects of both modular and custom construction, using two-story-high, steel-framed, pre-engineered buildings to maximize budget and increase flexibility.
“We were looking for a superior quality and cost-effective solution to support the enrollment growth at Cupertino High School, and Folia fit our needs perfectly,” said Polly Bove, superintendent at FUHSD, in the nomination form. “The overall value we’ve received is impressive, saving the district more than $3 million.”
The “Folia Complex” includes a custom, two-story building with three science classroom buildings and shared prep space on each floor, along with outdoor learning areas, break-out spaces and restrooms. Thanks to the complex’s non-load-bearing interior walls, various configurations can be easily adapted. For example, the 1,920-square-foot Robotics Lab was created by eliminating the wall in between two standard-sized classrooms.
