San Jose, Calif. (May 13, 2016) San Jose State University (SJSU) recently selected Blach Construction to build its new, world-class Spartan Golf Complex, a new practice and training facility located at SJSU’s South Campus, home to Spartan Stadium.
The Spartan Golf Complex will allow student-athletes to train to compete at the highest intercollegiate level, provide students and members with a premier training facility and is part of the University’s plan to relocate four sports facilities on the South Campus. The Complex, located between Alma Avenue and Humboldt Street, spans approximately 15 acres and will feature high-tech hitting bays and more than three acres of real grass teeing areas. This facility will allow the Women’s and Men’s golf teams to compete on a national level.
Blach Construction will collaborate with Gensler Architects for this project. Construction is anticipated to begin this month with an expected completion in November 2017.
Home to both Women’s and Men’s golf teams, the Complex will offer physical education to support academic programs, golf camps and clinics for students and services for alumni, donors and the public. The Complex is composed of two structures: a maintenance structure and a training building with a clubhouse.
The 7,775 sq.ft clubhouse includes a multipurpose lounge, locker rooms, workout facilities, meeting space, and conference space. The 8,075 sq.ft. training building also includes a fitness area, hitting bays, putting lab, offices, and locker rooms. The site will feature more than three acres of grass teeing area with hitting positions on both ends of the facility. The 30 exterior hitting areas will be lit for nighttime practice and the six interior hitting bays will feature the latest in golf swing technology and swing analysis equipment.
“We’re excited to continue working with San Jose State University on another great project,” said Tony Matulich, senior project manager for Blach. “The Blach team’s experience at SJSU’s new health center project will be a great foundation that sets the Spartan Golf Complex on the path to success, kicking off the South Campus expansion.”
This project marks the latest collaboration between Blach Construction and San Jose State University. Previously, Blach delivered the highly acclaimed new Student Health Center at the main campus in downtown San Jose.
The Spartan Golf Complex project is the first step in the proposed transformation of the South Campus’ athletics fields. The existing baseball field, softball field, soccer field, six tennis courts, a storage lot on courts previously used for tennis, and outbuildings will be demolished to build new facilities. The baseball field, softball field, soccer field and tennis courts will be relocated on the South Campus, per the new Master Plan.
Blach Construction and SJSU celebrated the project today with a groundbreaking ceremony held at SJSU’s South Campus. More than 50 attended the event, including students, donors, both Men’s and Women’s Golf teams, university and city officials and guests.
